Something Delicious is coming your way!

Hygge Dinner Party Ideas

Hygge was a huge trend last autumn, and it’s back again this year. In case you haven’t heard of it before, hygge is a Danish word which means “a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being”.

Essentially, that means enjoying good food with friends in a cosy, relaxed environment… what could be better for an autumn dinner party? Hygge is all about slow, simple living, shared with the most important people in your life. If you want to host a gathering for your friends this season, why not embrace the Danish way of living and throw a hygge dinner party?

Hygge Dinner Party Setting

Hygge is all about being comfortable and relaxed, so your home is the ideal setting! Don’t worry about transforming your home for a formal dinner party - instead, you want to keep things as cosy and chilled out as possible. Think lots of cushions and blankets, and a table where all your guests can gather round and chat to each other. You should also keep the dinner party intimate, so only invite your closest friends and people you really care about.

Hygge Dinner Party Decor

Make your home as cosy as possible to give your guests a taste of the hygge lifestyle this autumn. Light lots of flickering candles, and for bonus points have a log fire roaring to give the room a warm glow. Drape sheepskin throws over the chairs to add extra warmth and give people that hyggelig feeling. Keep place settings very simple and natural, and if you want to add a centrepiece, go for lots of candles and some small bunches of autumnal foliage.

Hygge Dinner Party Food

Food at a hygge dinner party should be rustic, comforting and delicious. Forget gourmet fine dining dishes, and instead opt for humble, family-style dishes which are made with love. Things like seasonal soups, stews and smorgasbords work really well. Serve everything in big dishes and platters, so guests can help themselves at the table. To make things even more hygge, you could organise a pot-luck style dinner party where each guest brings a dish. The Danes believe that everyone should help out and the host shouldn’t be stuck in the kitchen away from the guests, so a pot-luck dinner party is perfect if you want to embrace the hygge trend.

Hygge Dinner Party Entertainment

Set the scene during dinner with a relaxing playlist of your favourite chilled out songs. Relax afterwards with a glass of mulled wine or hot chocolate and have a good old catch up with your friends, rather than organising formal entertainment. Why not dig out the board games and play a friendly but competitive game of Articulate to finish off the night?
