Christmas Cocktails and Canapés

It’s always good to have some simple but effective cocktail and canapé recipes up your sleeve during the festive season. Whether you’re throwing a party or just want to share some delicious food and drink with your family, these cocktails and canapés are sure to impress.

We’ve gathered together a few of our favourite ideas and recipes that are perfect for stress-free entertaining at Christmas.

Sparkling Christmas Cocktails

Using prosecco or champagne in a cocktail is an easy way to make it seem luxurious, without having to spend hours with a cocktail shaker behind the scenes. Why not try one of these sparkling concoctions?

Clementine Bellini - add 50ml clementine juice and 25ml Grand Marnier to a champagne flute, and top up with prosecco

Mulled Wine Fizz - half fill a champagne flute with cooled mulled wine, then top up with prosecco and a handful of frozen berries

Christmas Mimosas - add 25ml cranberry juice and 25ml orange juice to a champagne flute, top up with prosecco and garnish with fresh cranberries and a sprig of rosemary

Sharing Christmas Cocktails

Another easy way to serve cocktails at a party is to create a big batch to share. Look for recipes that can be made in advance, and left to chill in a jug in the fridge. When it comes to serving, it’ll only take you a few seconds to make sure all your guests have a drink.

Festive Sangria - add 100ml apricot brandy and 25 ml sugar syrup to a large jug. Add pomegranate seeds, sliced pear and halved red grapes, then top up with white wine and lemonade.

Christmas Punch - add Benedictine liqueur, whisky, cranberry juice and orange juice to a large jug, along with a vanilla pod (or vanilla extract), sliced orange and halved cherries

Hot Christmas Cocktails

It wouldn’t be Christmas without a warming mulled wine or a hot toddy! Mulled drinks can usually be prepared in advance, so all you need to do is warm them up just before your guests arrive.

Mulled Pear and Ginger - add cloudy apple juice, sliced ginger, sliced pears, cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods, brown sugar, lime juice and lime zest to a pan. Simmer until sugar has dissolved, then add spiced rum and serve.

Spiced Sloe Gin - heat cloudy apple juice, clementine juice, cinnamon sticks, vanilla extract, cloves and orange slices in a pan. Strain and pour into a tumbler with a shot of sloe gin.

Easy Christmas Canapés

Instead of spending hours slaving away in the kitchen, select a few simple seasonal canapés that your guests will love.

Pigs in Blankets - wrap chipolata sausages in streaky bacon and cook in the oven for approx 20 minutes. Serve with cocktail sticks and serve with honey mustard dipping sauce.

Cranberry Brie Puffs - cut a sheet of puff pastry into small squares and top with a piece of brie and a spoonful of cranberry sauce, then bake for approx 10 minutes.

Pear and Stilton Bites - cut a pear into slices and top with crumbled stilton, grated parmesan, sliced grapes and crushed walnuts. Finish with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar.

Whole Baked Camembert - cut some slits in the top of the camembert and push in sprigs of rosemary and slices of garlic. Bake for approx 25 minutes, or until gooey in the middle, and serve with crusty bread.

Sweet Christmas Canapés

Why not finish your evening off with some sweet canapés and dessert nibbles?

Festive Meringue Kisses - create your favourite meringue mixture, then pipe small ‘kisses’ onto a baking sheet. Top with chopped pistachios and bake for approx 1 hour. Once cooled, drizzle with melted chocolate and pomegranate seeds.

Salted Caramel Brownie Bites - mix up your failsafe brownie mixture and bake. Once cooled, cut into bitesize pieces and top with a spoonful of caramel sauce, a sprinkling of sea salt and a dollop of whipped cream.

Chocolate Dipped Clementines - peel a clementine and divide into segments. Dip each segment half way into melted dark chocolate, sprinkle with desiccated coconut and leave to set.
